The fourth and final major of the year is upon us as the best players in the world travel to Royal Troon Golf Club for The Open Championship. Will Scottie Scheffler continue his incredible season, or will we see another player claim “The Champion Golfer of the Year” title? We will take a look at this week’s golf from a betting angle and of course suggest a few bets.
Royal Troon Golf Club
Located in South Ayrshire, Scotland, Royal Troon is a true costal links that is known to be one of the best courses on the Open Championship rotation. The par 71 plays 7385 yards and can be treacherous if the weather is bad.
The course is located right up against the sea for the first 9 holes and so the wind will most definitely be a factor the players will have to consider. As with most true links there are a number of pot bunkers located throughout the course and being able to avoid these is critical.
The greens at Troon are smaller than normal at the Open and so players need to be precise with their iron play. The weather forecast expects there to be gentle rain and a decent amount of wind from Thursday through to Saturday with the winds expected to pick up on Sunday afternoon.

Scottie Scheffler is favourite to win what would be his first Open and is trading at 5.50. He has been in excellent form with 2 wins and a runner up in his last 3 starts but he hasn’t improved on his 8th place finish in his debut Open in 2021 following that with a pair of top 25s and I am going to take him on this week.
The 2014 Open winner, Rory McIlroy istrading at 9.00 followed by Xander Schauffele at 12.00. The 2021 winner, Collin Morikawa is trading at 15.00.

SELECTIONS:
When it comes to the Open Championship it is often the more experienced golfers who are able to handle the pressure of the massive occasion that do well. The fact that it is also being played on a true links in tough weather gives an advantage to players who grew up playing those sorts of conditions and so they are easily able to adjust their game for the tournament.
Rory McIlroy at 9.00
Rory has arguably had the best form at the Open over any golfer in recent years. Although he has not won it since 2014, he has finished in the top 5 on four occasions since then as well as a 6th place finish at last year’s Open. Rory finished 4th at last week’s Scottish Open after taking a short break since his slip up at the US Open where he finished 2nd. He has finished in the top 5 in 5 of his last 7 tournaments with two of those being wins and 12th and 15th in the other two tournaments. His current form shows he has what it takes to win if he can just get over the mental barrier than has burdened him for the last couple of years.
Rory McIlroy each way at 9.00
Jordan Spieth at 61.00
Spieth has always been a player who is able to adjust his game to what is required at the Open having won the tournament in 2017. He has played in the tournament 10 times over his career where he has made every cut, had 4 top 10 finishes, 2 top 25 finishes as well as his win. Spieth missed the cut at last weeks Scottish Open but will be looking to bounce back from that as he heads to Troon for this week.
Jordan Spieth each way at 61.00 and top 10 finish at 6.00
Robert Macintyre at 45.00
Macintyre is coming off the back of an outstanding win at his home Scottish Open last weekend where he made a clutch birdie on the last to win the tournament. Macintyre grew up playing the conditions he will face this week and will definitely have an advantage over most of the field if he manages to make a good start on Thursday. He will still be bouncing after last weekends win and will use that momentum and form to put in a solid performance this week.
Robert Macintyre each way at 45.00
Ernie Els Top SA Player at 15.00
The “Big Easy” has not contended in an Open Championship for many a year but he is coming off his 1st Major Championship on the Seniors Tour and this is a Major where Seniors can often fare well, who will forget Tom Watson narrowly losing to Cink in a playoff in 2009 at 59 years old. I am backing the 2 time champion for a big week.
