The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup gets going on the 1st of June and is jointly hosted between the United States and the West Indies. We take a high-level look at the Tournament and single out a couple of long-term bets.
FORMAT
An extended format is being used for this event with 20 qualifying teams divided into four groups of 5. The top two teams from each group will go through to the Super 8 round where the qualifying teams will be split into two further groups of 4. From those groups the top two teams from each will qualify for the knockout stage which will consist of two semi-finals and a final.

India are the 5/2 favourites ahead of Australia at 7/2, England are priced at 11/2 with South Africa 7/1, 17/2 the hosts, West Indies and you can get 12/1 New Zealand and Pakistan, with 50/1 and better the balance.
With such an extended format there doesn’t seem to feel any need to rush into the Outright Betting and at this stage, for me, I will just be having a patriotic punt on South Africa at 7/1.
There is also Group Betting available and in Group A, India are the 1/3 favourites ahead of Pakistan at 5/2 and you can get 16/1 Ireland with the USA and Canada 66/1 and 100/1 respectively.
Group B should be contested by Australia priced at 8/10 and England 1/1 with Namibia next best in the Group Betting at a massive 50/1, Scotland and Oman are 80/1 and 100/1 respectively.
The West Indies top the betting in Group C at 14/10 ahead of New Zealand at 15/10. This group looks more competitive with Afghanistan coming in at 3/1 and Papua New Guinea and Uganda are priced at 66/1 and 125/1 respectively.
South Africa top the betting at 8/13 in Group D ahead of Sri Lanka at 33/10. This also isn’t the easiest of groups though with Bangladesh capable of causing an upset at 5/1. We don’t have to go back too far to when the Netherlands beat South Africa in a World Cup Tournament, they are 10/1 with Nepal 100/1 outsiders.
Just the one early bet for me here and that is Australia to top Group B at 8/10. They come in with an experienced side and a lot of players that have had IPL experience and should be able to hit the ground running. England haven’t convinced me of late and I would make Australia slightly shorter to win this group.
Suggested Bet: Australia to win Group B at 8/10.
There are plenty of alternative long-term betting markets to get involved in and I am going to make selections on a couple of them.
PLAYER TO HIT THE MOST 6s – Virat Kohli at 20/1
Kohli has not traditionally been known for his 6 hitting, but he was in cracking form in the IPL where he topped the run-scorer list and he hit 38 sixes, a mark only matched by Heinrich Klaasen who finished on the same amount. Klaasen at 16/1 could certainly be worth an interest but he doesn’t always get time at the crease and one thing we know about Kohli is that he is going to get plenty of that and I think that the 20/1 is a decent price.
TEAM TO SCORE THE HIGHEST INNINGS TOTAL – Australia at 28/10
With Head at the top of the order you can be assured that Australia get off to some quick starts and if they can bat first against the likes of Namibia, Scotland and Oman this could be a big runner.
TOP BOWLER – Mitch Starc at 10/1
Bumrah tops this market at 6/1 and while I have little doubt he will be the most effective bowler over this World Cup when taking wickets and run rates into consideration, teams do often try to see him out.
Starc ran into some excellent form towards the end of the IPL and he is my pick here given his ability to take wickets both at the top of the order and with his in-swinging yorkers at the death.
