The PGA Tour is off to the Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario this week for the Canadian Open and we select four players to take on the bookmakers.
THE COURSE
The Hamilton is what could be described as a classic course, designed way back in 1914. The Canadian Open was last hosted here in 2019 when Rory Mcilroy won, but there have been extensive changes since then and so course form is not really something we can look at this week. Being one of the shorter courses around the driving distance shouldn’t be that big a factor, but it is difficult to say exactly how it will play following the renovation. The course plays to a Par 70 and is 6,370 metres in length

MARKET LEADERS
Rory Mcilroy is a short-priced 7/2 to win the Tournament and although he was disappointing in the recent PGA Championship, he had won the week before at Quail Hollow and also the Zurich Classic with Shane Lowry, who is priced at 22/1. Tommy Fleetwood is next in the betting at 16/1 with the in-form Sahith Theegala at 18/1 and you can get 22/1 and better about the balance.

I am going to oppose Rory this week, not because I don’t think he can win, but just due to the short price, which I think opens up value elsewhere.
SELECTIONS:
Sahith Theegala each way at 18/1
This man has impressed me this year and has a runner-up finish to his credit four starts back. In the PGA Championship he was towards the top end of the leaderboard before a wobble, however, he did recover to finish 12th and against this field must be a strong runner.
Shane Lowry each way at 22/1
Lowry has a win and a Top 10 finish in his last 3 starts and that Top 10 came last time out when he was 6th in the PGA Championship. The win was partnering Rory in the Zurich Classic. Lowry is also one of the few players to play this course (before the renovation) and he was runner-up to Rory in 2019. He seems to be holding form well and I want him onside this week.
Erik van Rooyen each way at 55/1
It feels good to include a South African in the staking plan and van Rooyen is in a good form with a 4th place finish in his penultimate start and a respectable 53rd in the PGA Championship. His game seems to be coming good again and this is the sort of Tournament I can see him winning. Erik van Rooyen is also one of the players who played here in 2019 where he finished 20th behind Mcilroy.
Maverick McNealy each way at 40/1
McNealy is the last of my selections because I expected him to be a big price, but I guess you have to wake up pretty early in the morning to fool the bookmakers. McNealy has been in consistent form of late and had a Top 20 last week and a 23rd finish at the PGA Championship. This former World No. 1 Amateur seems to be coming of age and while I would have liked a bigger price, I am happy to take him here at 40/1.
