The Chinese Grand Prix takes place at the Shanghai International Circuit this weekend and it is the 5th stop on the 2024 calendar. We take a look at the race from a betting angle.
CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE
It was business as usual for Max Verstappen in Japan as he stormed to a victory, having retired in the previous Grand Prix in Australia.
Verstappen now sits on 77 points, 13 points clear of Perez who has had three 2nd places this term and was runner-up to Verstappen in Japan. Leclerc is 5 points further back with Carlos Sainz Jnr. now 22 points behind Verstappen having finished 3rd in Japan.
Looking at the Outright Betting, Max Verstappen remains an unbackable 1/20 favourite to win another Title, but good news for punters is that bookmakers have priced up “Without Verstappen” market where Sergio Perez is trading at 9/20 and Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc at 9/2

CHINESE GRAND PRIX
This will be the first Chinese Grand Prix held since 2019 when Lewis Hamilton won in his Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton has won 6 Chinese Grand Prix’s starting in 2008 and of those racing this weekend, Fernando Alonso is next best with 2.
The Shanghai International Circuit is 5.45 kilometres long and features one of the longest straights on the calendar of 1.2 kilometres and it is hard to look past the battle between Red Bull and Ferrari for supremacy.

Chinese fans will have their first ever opportunity to cheer home Chinese driver as Guanyu Zhou takes to the starting grid. A reflection of his chances is the 3000/1 starting odds and if you do fancy him for a blinder he is 40/1 to finish in the Top 6.
Suggested Bet: Carlos Sainz win at 16/1
Verstappen is the obvious favourite for this race and I am certainly not going to be throwing a lot of money at Sainz in taking him on. That being said, Sainz has had a great season and aside from one withdrawal has finished on the podium in each race including that victory in Australia. At this price we can’t do a lot of damage.
Suggested Bet: Carlos Sainz Podium at 8/10
As mentioned above the Ferrari’s and Red Bull’s are likely to fight this one out and based on recent showings, I give Sainz an edge on his teammate, Leclerc and I am backing him to grab his 4th podium in 5 starts.
Note that this will also be the first sprint of the season and here Max Verstappen is trading as the 2/9 favourite.

Sargeant has completed three races this season and in two of those he was classified as finishing last. This is not a bet I have taken before, but it promises to be entertaining watching the positions change amongst the tail-enders.
