The Cricket World Cup gets going in India on Thursday and we take a look at some of the long-term betting markets on offer.

This will be the first time that India hosts the Tournament on their own having shared hosting duties three times previously.

England are the defending Champions having beaten New Zealand in a thrilling Final in 2019 at Lord’s where the boundary countback system was needed after the Super Over still couldn’t separate the sides.

India are the favourites at 2/1 to win the Tournament on home soil with the defending Champions, England priced at 7/2, Australia, whose confidence took a knock in South Africa recently are 9/2, Pakistan 7/1, South Africa 9/1, New Zealand 10/1 and 40/1 and better the balance.

South Africa’s woes in World Cups are well documented and they certainly fly under the radar heading into this one and I can’t resist a patriotic punt on the Proteas to finally lift the Cup.

Suggested Bet:  South Africa win at 9/1

Gill and Kohli top the betting boards here at 13/2 with Sharma and Azam priced at 10/1.  You can get 12/1 England’s Malan and 14/1 and better the balance.

One man I have been impressed with of late is Devon Conway from New Zealand.  Conway has proven to be a prolific run scorer at the top of the order and New Zealand are always competitive in this format and could well be hanging about come the semi-final stage. He has experience in the conditions thanks to the IPL and I am going to be backing Conway to be the top run scorer.

Suggested Bet:  Conway at 16/1

Bumrah is the favourite here at 8/1 ahead of Yadav at 17/2, Afridi is 9/1 and you can get 10/1 and better the balance.

Bumrah is certainly a worthy favourite , but I have my eyes on a couple of other bowlers, Mitch Starc is 10/1 and was the top wicket taker in the 2019 World Cup although conditions won’t be quite as suitable this time round.  South Africa’s Rabada will be key to the Proteas hopes of winning the trophy and if he fires he could look a value play at 25/1 to get the most wickets.  I also think that England’s Wood will be a big factor with his pace and as the batsmen go after him there should be plenty of wickets to be had.

I am going to settle on Australian spinner, Zampa though.  He took some serious tap in a match in South Africa he would like to forget, but he is a quality bowler who can take wickets in all conditions and he should be well suited by the Indian pitches.

Suggested Bet:  Top Bowler, Zampa at 18/1

Sharma tops the betting boards here at 13/2 with Maxwell, Livingstone and Marsh all priced at 8/1.  My eyes go slightly further down the list though to South African, Klaasen who has put some brilliant innings together of late.  He is a man who has no problem clearing the boundaries and I am going to be backing him to do that more so than any other player in the Tournament.

Suggested Bet:  Klaasen, most 6’s at 9/1
