The Wyndham Championship 2023 Betting Preview

The Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina is the host for this week’s PGA Tour event, The Wyndham Championship.  It is the final event of the regular season with the Top 70 players on the FedEx Cup List progressing to FedEx St. Jude Championship next week.

THE COURSE

The Sedgefield Country Club plays to a par 70 and is a classic Donald Ross design that offers an unique blend of challenge and playability although it must be said that the professional players tend to get the better of it and a winning score of -20 or better is likely.

The course favours precision over power which brings a lot of the shorter hitters into play and it is certainly not a bomber’s paradise although of course length off the tee is still an advantage.  Players who can shape their shots tend to go well here and a strong, short game is also needed particularly with the putter as the undulating greens are fairly easy to find.

Tom Kim finished with a 9 under par 61 last year for a 5 shot victory.  He won’t be returning to defend his Title and at the time of writing Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im are joint leaders at 18/1 at the top of the betting boards with Sam Burns and Russell Henley 20/1 and you can get 22/1 and better the balance.

This looks like another open event and while current form is something I would look at, course form tends to hold up well at Sedgefield.

SELECTIONS:

Sungjae Im each way at 18/1

Im was 2nd last year and has 3 Top 10’s in 4 starts at this course and he is one of those players who loves to go low.  His recent form isn’t much to write home about with two missed cuts in his last 4 starts, but between that he has had two Top 25 finishes.  Back at a layout which he loves and which suits his game I am expecting him to go close.

J.T. Poston each way at 28/1

Poston was joint runner-up last week in the 3M Open and that was on the back of a 41st place finish in The Open which given the strength of the field was not a bad result.  He previously had back-to-back 6th place finishes and carries some of the strongest current form of the field into this event.  His form at Sedgefield is quite erratic with 3 missed cuts in 6 starts, but in 2019 he won the Tournament and last year was a respectable 21st.  Given how well he is playing at the moment he is a must in the staking plan.

Chesson Hadley each way at 110/1

Hadley has been playing this course for many years and never showed anything up until 2021 when he finished 15th, he improved on that last year with an 8th place finish so he clearly has grown to love the track.  Hadley has certainly had some solid form to his name with a 6th place finish at the Barracuda two weeks back and a 27th place last week.

Garrick Higgo each way at 75/1

It has been a while since I had a South African in the staking plan and I am hoping that Higgo can do the business this week.  He finished Top 15 at the 3M Open and his two previous starts were a 19th and a 21st place finish so he is certainly showing some consistent form.

Higgo made his debut at this course last year, missing the cut, but I am prepared to overlook that as players often take some time to get to know this course and I think that Higgo has the game to handle the Sedgefield layout.
