After a couple of days off the General Classification contenders are back into the thick of things as the Tour de France hits the Pyrenees in Stage 5 on Wednesday.
Starting in Pau and finishing 162.7 kilometres later in Laruns there is an out of category and a Cat 1 climb to get over. We take a look at the stage from a betting angle.
STAGE 4 WRAP UP
It was good news for followers of these previews on Stage 4 as Jasper Philipsen just held on from Caleb Ewan in a thrilling sprint finish to get us on the board for Tour de France 2023.
The stage itself ran well behind schedule after the expected early break never materialised and the peloton simply trundled along for the first 100 odd kilometres. A couple of Frenchmen then livened things up a bit and there were unfortunately some crashes on the race track in the final 2 kilometres.
It was clear from the way the stage was ridden that everyone had their eyes on Wednesday’s venture into the Pyrenees.
JERSEY UPDATE
There is no change of any significance to the Yellow Jersey, King of the Mountains or Team Classifications Betting although Philipsen with his win has taken a firm handle on the Green Jersey and is now trading at 1/3 to ride it all the way into Paris.

THE ROUTE
The stage gets off to quite an easy start and we have an intermediate sprint after 48.8 kilometres, but the second-half of the stage is really tough with the out of category Col de Soudet which rises for 15.2 kilometres at 7.2%. There is then a Cat 3 climb of 4.2 kilometres at 7% before the Col de Marie Blanque which peaks at 18 kilometres to go. That rises at 4.7 kilometres at 8.6% and we then have a descent with the final 7 kilometres rising very gradually.

VERDICT
This stage has been priced as if it is going to be raced amongst the Yellow Jersey contenders and there certainly will be Yellow Jersey action, but I also think that this is a stage that can be won by the break away or even a late attack up the final climb.
Suggested Bet: Felix Gall win at 28/1
Gall has been in excellent form, but has already lost some time, but if he still has his climbing legs could well escape before the summit of the final climb and ride to victory.
